The Ten Best Strategies for Living Longer

The Ten Best Strategies for Living Longer

Many of us have the potential to live longer simply by developing habits that help prevent life threatening problems. The most important steps:
  1. Don’t smoke. Cigarettes shorten life by causing heart disease, emphysema, cancer and other diseases.
  2. Eat a balanced diet and maintain a desirable weight. This increase overall well-being and the health of cells.
  3. Exercise regularly. Fitness increases resistance to disease.
  4. Drink alcohol only in moderation. Heavy alcohol intake has been linked to numerous disorders, from malnutrition and stroke.
  5. Have regular medical checkups. Also, see a doctor as soon as you’ve detected a problem, and follow his advice.
  6. Get enough sleep, whether it’s a night or includes a nap during the day.
  7. Avoid overexposure to sun and cold. Older persons are more vulnerable to excesses of heat and cold because the aging body doesn’t handle temperature variations as efficiently as it once did.
  8. Practice good safety habits at home. Falls and fires take the lives of many older people.
  9. Stay involved with family and friends. Depression is a major problem of the elderly, often brought on by loneliness.
  10. Maintain a positive outlook on life. Your attitude is extremely important in determining the quality and duration of life. Satisfaction and pleasure seem to contribute to good health and long life just as surely as any pill or medication does.
